My experience is that a small number of people actually define what a nation is, at least as far innovation, ambition & liberty, and that these people reap the vast majority of the wealth & power. This unbalance makes democracy problematic when the majority can harness State violence to take what they want from the minority that have it. Ideology plays an important part in the conflict because if you can convince the populace that they are simply "temporarily embarrassed millionaires," then they'll play along, but you got to get a majority who believe it. Optimistic Americans will accept long odds, 1-in-4 don't seem so bad, but 1-in-100? No. Government policy should be to redistribute wealth among the top quarter if The American Dream is to be believable.

Okay, so has democracy in America become problematic? A major portion has taken to violence (or at least, condone the violence of their own more extreme members) to try to take what they want.

I agree, we need to do something to rebuild the middle class and striving for improving. But I'm not sure I'm on board with how you do this.

I'm not much on govt. give aways, however, I am a guy who likes to make the best of a given situation. For instance, when we did TARP. I felt we should have payed the mortgages of the people that were causing the banks to go under. I mean, if you are forced to right the banks (not that we were), do it with the added benefit of a bunch of people who suddenly own their home outright. This would have freed up a ton of wealth and masses of people would spark the economy more than giving the money to corporate bank boards.

The only one thing that could cause the group called the right to come out guns blazing would probably be trying to take their firearms. In 1775 we didn't revolt because the British came in and took over our houses for Soldiers, we didn't revolt when they took away free speech, we didn't revolt when the removed local judges from criminal cases, but when it was clear they meant to disarm Americans that was it. In America, we want free speech first, if that fails, ok, but don't take away the ability to defend ones self.
