The Hanoi zoo is a throwback to the 1950s: old-style iron-barred cages, modern & clean but impossibly small, exotic but common species, and more children's rides than animals. The zoo is located in the city center, with a lake on one side and apartments forming the back wall of the deer enclosure. (In fact, some tenants had their washing hanging right over the yard.) The animals seemed content, none were pacing, though I suspect the large cats were sedated. A telling indicator, however, were the rats eating the Pygmy Loris' food.

Also concerning, we watched as some dick on his motorcycle sicced his dog on a baboon in a cage. The dog jumped on the bars & barked a couple times before the baboon went at him. The dog scooted away but motorcycle-guy sicced him again. This time the baboon charged, screeching, banging against the bars. The dog, barely evading an outstretched arm, ran away. Good thing because that baboon would have pulled its heart out through its throat. Motorcycle guy mounted up & chased after it. Oh, yeah, all the monkeys were infected with mange, probably from the rats.
