The Beauty Standard is Caucasian
The power of advertising, which is the power of conformity, cannot be understated. Even though Western media is mostly officially blocked in China, it is still very influential. Western music is popular with young people, and Western fashion has almost universally been adopted. Western brands indicate high status, and models on posters and billboards are Western-looking or actual Westerners.
The cult-of-the-West is all harmless really but what is more provocative is actual body modification to look more physically Caucasian. Consider the common surgical procedure in China of eye rounding. Also, sin whiteners are big business, with aisles of them in drug stores & supermarkets. I wanted a picture of a box that said "skin whitener" in English but couldn't find one among all the Kanji boxes. A fellow shopper, Chinese, who noticed our exasperation asked if she could help, and when asked, she pointed to one, saying "this is the one I use." (Indeed, she did have an exceptionally pale complexion.
