Blue Utes
Due to 35 years of economic sanctions, Iran has been forced into self-sufficiency, and the pride that goes with it. An obvious sign of such smugness it their ubiquitous blue "utes" (Australian for small trucks with overhead utility trays). The utes have an Islamic-spelling name across the tailgate but the design itself is obviously an early-1980s Nissan "Junior" small pickup.Occasionally there are white utes but the vast majority are deep blue in color. Blue must have some significance to Iranians because even non-Nissan trucks are painted the same blue color, including homemade copycat utility trays. Sometimes there are several dozen blue utes visible, and a line of identical blue utes will be following each other on the roads. The utility aspect of the utes is apparent, many are loaded way beyond capacity both heavy & high loads. There are lots of late model French cars in Iran but the blue utes give the flavor of the place better than anything.
