The French are basically protecting the non Muslim sub-Saharan Black Africans from the Islamist Arab Africans, so thats where it gets viable, because you have the Islamists against the Christians, so you have a "ARVN" proxy to defend from the "Arab Cong", and plenty of options to set up your bases of operations, basically just using French bases and fighting with the French.heydaralon wrote:
We have been massively escalating our presence in Africa. We have a base in Djibouti but there are probably many others I don't know about. I read a Nick Turse book years ago where he talked about a pivot to Africa, but its hard to think of a good place to plant a flag. We are already doing stuff in the horn, but by your been there done that train of thought, we wouldn't mess with Somalians again. Aside from their location and Al Shabaab, there isn't much alluring in that country. Much of West Africa is still France's backyard, and they are weirdly interventionist in some ways. I guess if Africa is where the next shitstorm forms my bet would be Nigeria. A lot of oil, Boko Haram, all the makings of a great movie.
Whereas Syria, is just chaos, there's no structure to it, you really don't have any place where you could gain purchase to be in there for a sustained period of time, you can send SF in there in small teams, but it's too much of a free for all to get a big force in there with some way of coming to grips with it, it's an amorphous blob, which is actually not a good candidate, creeping intervention needs time, space, and some sort of organized structure to actually creep into.

Re: Meanwhile in Iraq & Syria
Basically, if I put my Nefarious Creeping Interventionist hat on, and look at Syria, the problem becomes; "where do we start?"
You could big time it I suppose, Operation Syrian Freedom, but the thing is, you couldn't get a mandate for that right now, the operating word in creeping intervention is "creeping", I can see how you could go big and kick the door in, Iraq War style, but like I said, that's been discredited, you're in the Post Vietnam Syndrome phase right now, so the name of the game is incremental when it comes to getting another intervention going, and the Syrian situation does not lend itself to incremental, it's kind of go big or go home, and you can't really go big while America is in one of its Post Vietnam Syndrome pauses.
Thus, you kind of have to look for prospects a decade or more out, long term prospects, that's why I'm looking at you, Jungles of Latin America.

Oh please. It's not about being pro-Assad. The rebels are Islamists who are slaughtering Christians. The bishops have consistently condemned western governments for their complicity in the genocide of Christians.
You want to join the rebels? Good luck. Pick the terrorists that matcH you particular apathy towards, and hatred of, Christians.
You sure as shit are not on the side of the Christians. The bishops are quite clear on that score.

Thing is, eventually, America will be completely burnt out on the ME, and Moos-lambs, and desert war, and "overseas", but see, that's where they just invoke the Munroe Doctrine; "Drug Cartels!", even "Communism!" all over again, repacked as "Leftist Narco Terrorism!", invoking Latin America as the "homefront" and not a "foreign" war, "defensive", not "offensive", and "security in the Americas" rather than "power projection over there", and thus make everything new again, all draped in jungle cam.

The Syrian Kurds are rebels, and Christians are also among the rebels. Are you saying that the Kurds of the Rojava commune has been slaughtering Christians? As for "my", "apathy and hatred of Christians"...? Yeah, StA, I'm downright deplorable. A Nazi, actually. No, a Racist. A Christophobe. A Fascist-Communist-Racist-Nazi, who's a big ol' meanie who won't let you stay up late at night and let little precious have the last cookie.Speaker to Animals wrote:BjornP wrote:Speaker to Animals wrote:Also, from a Christian perspective, if you oppose Assad, then you essentially support the genocide of Christians.
