So

Don't keep your money under the mattress un-deployed for 30 frickin years and you'll be OK

That be nice, but a dollar back thirty years ago is worth $1.53 today, yet the cost of everything else has gone up by 50% minimum... do you not see a problem with that?
No, a dollar is worth a dollar. You just have less purchasing power with it.
No, a dollar is not worth a dollar... if you understand economics at all you'd understand that. It's the same reason gas is cheaper in some states than others. A dollar doesn't go as far in some states for that reason. So no, a dollar doesn't equal a dollar.

I need to hire a young attorney, and literally cannot find one with the requisite skills, we are willing to overpay, but if you're good and tough, the world is your oyster.
What requisite skills are you looking for?

All my young buddies who are in the field seem to be getting screwed.

I can tell you in my specific niche industry there ain't a guy making under 6 figures and we have trouble finding people. We even train the requisite skills, thing is nobody grows up even thinking about the manufacturing field anymore. They all want to work in a cubicle till they die.
Manufacturing? Isn't manufacturing going to be taken over by automation soon-ish?

So you're saying there is an entry level position earning 100k+?

No commentary on why the same people's employable skills aren't ever going up.

If I dress provocatively, will I get hired?

Guys, it's time to adapt to where the economy is instead of bemoaning the fact that paper-metrics can make the past look like something it never really was.

Instead of concentrating on hand-picked stats that support the socialist narrative of capitalism making everything suck and destroying the quality of life (and you should really look into whether or not that's true), try focusing on your advantages and opportunities.

For instance:
  • 1. You own a small, handheld, telecommunications computer, more advanced than anything the boomer generation could've dreamed of.
    2. You own a personal automobile that grants you limitless travel access to anything your heart desires.
    3. Thanks to the innovations of others, you can put #1 and #2 together and drive/deliver for Amazon/Uber/Lyft and be your own boss right now.
Think about that.
That's just one small example of shit you have, that previous generations never had - plus a way you can leverage it into self-employment. Fucking incredible. Unbelievable. Do you know how many people your ancestors would've killed with their bare hands for opportunity and wealth like that?

Instead y'all are mad about inflation rates vs. wage stagnation.

Try looking forward, not backward. You'll get further that way.

If anybody doesn't know what kind of effect inflation has on the wealth and prosperity of the ordinary people. Look at the following table and see what country has had the lowest post-WW2 inflation rate. Yep, West Germany.

Then compare how well off Germans are to Italians.

Then look at the inflation in Greece.

Which country is the most prosperous?

But hey, the inflation shot & devaluation works for those who can invest with debt money (domestic money, that is) and are in the export sector.

lol I got into this whole automation thing in another thread. It's a bit overblown. At least in the near future. Who knows what 50 years will look like though.

My specific niche is environmental and safety stuff. Dust collectors, hex chrome, explosive dusts, stuff like that.

Need a basic grasp of Algebra, and the ability to learn the rest. Just about every company in my field is looking very hard. I could PM you a couple companies who are looking. If you have any engineering background you're pretty much guaranteed a job. Non engineering background... they'll interview you to make sure you're smart enough to figure the stuff out and then hire you.

They can't, because the internet is an exponential yet warped rear view mirror, and it's so seductive to wallow in the nostalgia for an America that never was, they can't bring themselves to look away. They don't even really have their own popular culture, they just do homage to all that has come before them.

What has talking about inflation to do with the fact that technology has advanced and is advancing?

Yep, they have in Greece all those gizmos too.

When I was young in the 1980's, I used to wonder what the future would be like, but turns out, it's just a big revival of the 1980's, forever and ever and ever, the rise of the internet, stopped the culture where it was, and its just been sitting there ever since.
