Re: History related tv series and movie news megathread.
The idea that cable expects people to want to watch a 40 minute episode of NCIS baton rogue dispersed between 20 minutes of shitty mind numbing commericals is kind of sickening. I really hope that HBO and Netflix force these idiots to up their game and start pumping out good shows instead of formulaic garbage. It probably won't happen, but if 99% of television channels stopped existing tomorrow, I feel as though our culture would not lose much tbh. Cable companies have been fiercely resisting a la carte type models for years. No! You can't just get espn and amc, you have to get all our shitty channels that you won't watch and pay out the ass! Some balls on those people. They are kind of wising up, but not by much. Fuck cable seriously!

Well the trend is moving in the opposite direction on the consolidated TV market, and that shows no signs of abating, so you might want to brace yourself. People might stop watching shitty network TV shows, but even if that happened, the trend towards a more fragmented TV market would not be reversed, it would only accelerate. The a la carte model isn't being resisted anymore because the streaming services now realize they can gouge their customers just as well with the new model as the cable companies did, so all the cable companies are trying to get their own streaming service going, and many of them will succeed, and Netflix isn't going to crush them and prevent that from happening, contrary to what of some folks might think.

I can't watch cable anymore. Commercials take up a third, and the quality is not there. I usually just watch food network if I'm eating by myself, and that's about it. My parents like college football, and some of those law and order shows, but I cannot watch a USA, TNT, or CBS show without gagging at how asinine and mediocre it is. If you want to watch mediocre tv, you don't even need cable. Netflix has plenty of that too. I wonder how much AMC and ESPN, and the news channels are carrying this awful business model. If you took those away, how many people would cancel their cable overnight?

Lost (ABC), Friday Night Lights (NBC) and 24 (FOX) are the only really good Network TV dramas that I've seen that aired during the 21st Century. I've heard good things about Hannibal (NBC) though, especially the cinematography, never got around to it though. These are the exceptions of course, far from the rule.

I am not watching that shit. Sounds bad.heydaralon wrote:What does this even mean? What are you even arguing Hwen? Actually they have too much. The same problem indie comics have when facing Marvel and DC.StCapps wrote:Network TV has been fucked long before Netflix came along, and Cable TV has never been stronger.GrumpyCatFace wrote:I mean the current business model of network/cable television. There are a few big spectacles left, big-ticket shows, and some sports coverage, and that's it. The rest is 300+ channels of filler, with nobody watching. Netflix hath come to pass, and there shall be none left in its wake.
Streaming serives aren't going to displace cable anytime soon, they don't have enough quality original shows, and I don't see that changing anytime in the near future. HBO, FX and AMC are the big players, and the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon are well behind them. If you only have one subscription to a television streaming service, then you are missing out on a fuck ton of quality television, unless you are resorting to piracy, that is just a fact.

The biggest problem with most Netflix original shows is that they overcompensate for being on Netflix and trick themselves into thinking they don't need distinct episodes now that the binge watching is a thing.Hwen Hoshino wrote:Actually they have too much. Network TV is even worse. I tried watching the Midnight TX show on NBC because I'm a woman that likes Charlene Harris' books and I really like the characters in those books but its just too fucking corny.heydaralon wrote:I can't watch cable anymore. I guess network TV is still for the boomers?
College football and all the MMA content on FS1 makes it worth it. Also, I'd rather have my kids watch Nick or Disney than random vlogs on Youtube
