Back when I was a kid, I was just a hater who thought he was lucky, but now, I know better, there was a method to his madness, it was just some special, special shit.
Obviously he was a Leaf killer, but I never disliked him.

Hasek was a happy warrior, I couldn't hate him, he's just too nice of a guy.
Yeah, if I hadn't been a kid, he hadn't single handedly beat Canada at Nagano,
Me and my Da were gutted. We were watching it in some bar in Cabbagetown with the rubbies.

The walk home was like a funeral procession.

But we never blamed Hasek, we blamed Bobby Clarke.

My dad let me go to bed real early so I could wake up and watch it, on a school night, and watched probably the greatest single game goaltending performance I ever seen steal the game for the Czechs. Traumatizing.

We just chalked it up to same ol same ol Canada icing an NHL team for international play.

On the big ice, the NHL paradigm is weak.

On European big ice, you go all skill, Bobby Clarke iced an NHL team; bad ju ju.

It came down to a shootout because Canada couldn't score in regulation.

They couldn't score in regulation because they iced a Stanley Cup team.

On international big ice you have to go for speed and skill.

That Nagano team was too many tough guys, not enough snipers, you have to tailor the line up for the mission.

I mean, Shayne Corson was on that Nagano team.

That's all you need to know about the stupidity of Nagano.

Canada never iced a Shayne Corson team again, which is why they won in Salt Lake.

I know. That was what my dad said, his reaction was more like you and your dad's reaction, but I was nine, and even though I deep down knew that was truth, the emotional reaction overrode it for a year or two at least, only age and hindsight snapped me out of it.

Speaking of really good goaltending performances, Mrazek and the Canes defense have shut down the Caps 5-on-5 in back to back games. Series now tied 2-2.

Nagano was all Bobby Clarke's fault.

He decided he needed some fourth line NHL tough guys, at the Olympics.

Big ice, international rules, all those guys Clarke picked were dead weight.

Yeah fuck Bobby Clarke as management, he's dead weight. Cost Gretzky a chance at gold, to bring in some slow fourth line tough guys, sad.
