Ovechkin would have put up Gretzky like goal numbers against the goalies of yore.

He's honestly one of the best pure goal scorers of all time.

He's just had to do it in the the butterfly goaltender lightweight goalie equipment era.

If he was facing the clown show goalies of the 80's, he would have put up insane numbers. 1000+ goals.
He's the best pure goal scorer in my books, given the era and all, once you factor that in, like you said 1000+ goals.

If you go back and look at Gretzky's 800 plus goals, honestly, the goaltenders were pathetic.

Half the time they just panicked and the puck went right through them.

Patrick Roy changed goaltending forever. Everything is before Patrick Roy and after.

Patrick Roy is the greatest goaltender of all time.

Not because he has the best numbers.

Because he changed goaltending fundamentally.

Patrick Roy is the goalie who made the goalies the guys who could steal a Stanley Cup for you.

Hasek was better, but Patrick Roy is The Sopranos of goaltending. Without Roy, Hasek never would have been as great as he was, without The Sopranos, The Wire and Breaking Bad wouldn't even exist.

When it comes to greatness, Roy and The Sopranos have the edge because of that.

Roy was more reliable than Hasek. When Hasek got hot, he was unbeatable.

But Roy did it more consistently, Roy didn't even have to get that hot, to steal a Stanley Cup for you.

True, Hasek was less consistent, but when he was hot, he was by far the greatest hot goalie there ever was. The teams Hasek played for held him back until he got to Detroit, or he'd have more Stanley Cups.

Hasek was a bit of a circus freak tho. He was kind of like Chara; freak of nature.

In terms of technical goaltending for the masses, Roy invented the goaltending we see now.

When Hasek did the Fish Flop, it actually worked, was the craziest thing I've ever seen goalie-wise, I could never believe my eyes. Back when I was a kid, I was just a hater who thought he was lucky, but now, I know better, there was a method to his madness, it was just some special, special shit.

Circus freak doesn't even do it justice, that's putting it lightly.

Obviously he was a Leaf killer, but I never disliked him.

Hasek was a happy warrior, I couldn't hate him, he's just too nice of a guy.

Yeah, if I hadn't been a kid, he hadn't single handedly beat Canada at Nagano, and he didn't go on to play for the Red Wings, I wouldn't have been able to hate him either. But because of that perfect storm, I was blinded by hate.

It wasn't until the tail end of his career that I actually stopped hating him and started to like him, all it took was a little age and hindsight, and I overcame the hate.
