The differences between Soviet communism and Spanish republicans is also interesting...
Orwell's book "Homage to Catalonia" boiled down to his sense of betrayal by the communists and the infighting between anarchists and communists...
Basically these global movements "fascism" and "communism" never gelled the way people thought they would.
This is also classically illustrated by the presumption that USSR and Maoist China would become allies... which they did not.
Globalism is not as near as people believe it to be... and probably never will be.
Homage is a good book. So is his work on actual labor in england.
The problem was /is that there were and are true believers/idealist that then get murdered by the dictators men or psychopaths eventually .

In a lot of ways it appears Stalin was more nationalist than international. Certainly after the war. He targeted Ukrainians, Kazaks and Jews eventually .
I find it interesting that China and Vietnam don't much like each other as well.

The problem with what?
Communism?
The list of problems with Communism is a lot longer than that.

I meant that essentially Orwell (giving him the benefit of the doubt and believing him sincere) went to fight for Anarchism/Socialism ----a better world etc. and there were others like him even "communists" and they were co-opted by the Stalinist a so on. This is true of most or all communist takeovers I've read about. The idealist/dreamers / "true believers" etc. are eventually sooner or later destroyed by the cutthroats / psychopaths/sadists and that's that. I'm no fan of Capitalism nor Communism.

Book description
Mine Were of Trouble: A Nationalist Account of the Spanish Civil War
Written by Peter Kemp, one of these rare volunteers for the Nationalists was Peter Kemp, a young British law student. Kemp, despite having little training or command of the Spanish language, was moved by the Nationalist struggle against international Communism. Using forged documents, he sneaked into Spain and joined a traditionalist militia, the Requetés, with which he saw intense fighting. Later, he volunteered to join the legendary and ruthless Spanish Foreign Legion, where he distinguished himself with heroism. Because of this bravery, he was one of the few foreign volunteers granted an private audience with Generalissimo Francisco Franco.

Kemp published his story in 1957, one of the only English accounts of the war from the Nationalist perspective

I ordered the book earlier in the week. I let you know what I think of it.

Chances of Trump actually having read it zero.

The "Mystery Grove!" part in the tweet looks edited in. There are plenty of people out there who'd be more likely to buy a Trump-endorsed product, just like there'd be people who'd endorse products simply by being endorsed by progressive big names, or entertainment or influencer celebritites.

It wasn't my intent to make this another Trump thread, but to simply use that as a Segway to the fact I've finally started to study the Spanish Civil War. Something I've neglected for a long time.

Just working on the basics and getting the timeline of events locked in

Didn't mean to make it a Trump thread, either. I don't personally find the Spanish Civil War all that interesting on its own, usually used to seeing it as just the primer for the ideological conflict between the two major totalitarian ideologies at a time when Western, liberal democracy was the globally least popular form of government. Reading primary source accounts is what brings people closest to history as it was, though, so I hope you'll enjoy the book. I'm hoping he saved some of the letters he wrote at the time, and will be quoting from them in the book you ordered.
