At one point during Vietnam, the Pentagon took every single metric they had, and in order to figure out "when are we going to win the Vietnam War?", put it all on punch cards, and fed it into the huge computers of the basement of the Pentagon, they left on friday night and let the data be crunched all weekend, when they came back on monday morning the computers had spit out the answer; "you already won, in 1965".

And you know, that US military in Vietnam gets a bad rap, "draftees", "pot smokers", what have you, but those conscripts in Vietnam, they were as hardcore as any US military in history, I was listening to an audio recording of the battle of Hill 724 at Dak To, 3rd/8th Infantry, and it's straight out of World War One, the NVA has them surrounded, the Americans are just hanging onto the position by their fingernails, 22 killed including the CO, 118 seriously wounded, 110 guys left on top of the hill the next day, and all of them are wounded too. And that's just one night of fighting, every little battle for every little hill, and at any moment it could turn into the Alamo.

Contrary to popular myth, they actually threw the kitchen sink at Vietnam, with the best troops they had.

There's only two peoples in the world who even think like this, the Americans, and the North Koreans. You see interviews with random people in North Korea and they're going on about how they're surrounded and they're gonna fight the whole world, and it's like "hollup, that sounds just like the Americans, nobody else even talks like that, just the Americans, and the North Koreans..."

You can talk to Russians, you can talk to Chinese, they're not like that, they're quite sophisticated, their whole outlook is geopolitical and strategic, but if you talk to Americans, or North Koreans, it's just "cuckoo... cuckoo".
