And their social welfare programs stay intact when the pyramid reverses I suppose?
I'm not sure what you're getting at? Social welfare is a relatively new phenomenon: the young didn't used to be the slaves of the old. There's plenty of capacity; nobody's going to lose their bowl of rice or wifi.

All those programs require more paying in than taking out.

If young people are greatly outnumbered by the old, it doesn't work.

You mean like, who's going to chop the wood?
You think there's not enough places to live? In a declining population?
You think there's not enough rice? Really? America alone could supply all the rice the world needs if it had too, but it doesn't.
You think there's not enough energy? Not enough broadband? Healthcare?

What isn't there going to be enough of?

So you're saying that a society that subsidizes the old will be just fine with less young people paying in than old people who exist?

Will they survive? Well yea... but it won't be some smooth transition into whatever system takes the place of the existing one.

I'm saying we have huge excess capacity, and I can't imagine what could overwhelm it in a declining population scenerio. If the population was exploding, yeah, infrastructure fail, but with lots of unused capacity around, nope. Even medical care is underutilized though you might make a case for exploding 24/7 dementia care.

I think what you're saying is how do you give retirees half-million dollar a year government pensions without a tax base?
Answer: you don't.

Lol, and I don't think dismissing a change of expected entitlements as a minor issue accurately reflects the shit storm that will come with it.

What they gonna do, they're old people, and they don't even have guns. What, they gonna vote that the young people have to be their slaves?

Ponzi scheme retirement has it's drawbacks but one of them is not having a place to live, something to eat, and wifi.

They will likely vote for more immigration, en masse, when they start feeling the pain.

They can't vote to enslave young people, but they can vote to increase the young people.

The old ones are probably the ones most invested in the ethnostate, but I imagine their views will change if they are going broke.

You're dismissing the Japanese ethics by conflating them with American ones. The elderly already work. There is not a giant subclass of citizens being fully subsidised like over here.
