What type of job matters though. Unskilled service does not the same pay make as unskilled factory worker or even labor. They do the same thing over here where they made up the difference with all the new table waiting and register manning jobs made the difference up. It is not something men of blue collar will do with any modicum of self respect my man.

Yup. And one great thing about unskilled factory workers is that they tend to become skilled factory workers.

I don't know what skills waiters gain over time...extra good pitcher pouring skillz? I guess that side pour that lets in ice cubes is kinda hard to do.

For the record, this is not meant to be insulting to anyone who waits tables. I have done way worse things to pay the bills. I just think it's insane that we expect these jobs to replace jobs where people actually create things.

It's true. The litany of machines I've learned to operate over the years lend experience to the point I can pick up a new one in a matter of days instead of weeks; along with more overall experience concerning accidents and how to prevent them. These kind of skills are why steel mills require resumes and references. I just learned a couple new machines the other day. Not great at the Raymond lift yet but I'm putting it to work. Somebody leaves, see ya!

+1. I'm working on getting my towmotor license right now. I'm sick of interrupting our technicians to ask them to get something for me...

My wife is a bartender and she excels at it. More oft than not she's made better money than me but she has a set of skills I absolutely lack.

It was pointed out to Farage during the campaign that only around half of immigration into the UK comes from the EU anyway but that did not stop him going on about "waves" of immigration.

Yesterday he was still talking tough on immigration saying UKIP needs to be more radical
http://www.itv.com/news/2017-02-24/nige ... migration/

High levels of immigration are required to fill positions in many industries including the health service. If those vacancies aren't filled by EU members they will just come from further abroad. This idea that waves of EU migrants are putting British people out of jobs or just coming over to claim benefits are clearly false.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Skills like diplomacy? Lol, I can't even imagine tending bar as a woman.

These sorts of jobs in engineering and steel just aren't available any more. Reducing immigration isn't going to magically make them appear again. Maggie killed off a lot of the ship building, steel and coal jobs 30 years ago when she was "modernising" Britain.

Couldn't you just reverse the Thatcher policies? Seems a little defeatist, Bruce Hornsby.
