Mages are pretty useless until the higher levels.
The early campaigns are in effect shorter warm up campaigns to get you ready for the campaigns at higher levels.
It's best to keep them to a few hours each. The characters can't take much damage anyways.
Include some key plot elements that come to fruition in the later campaign.
Basically set up the elements that you want in the level 4-5 campaigns.
By then the mage becomes a key role... The warriors protect him like the quarterback... clerics play intermediate positions healing the wounded in the back lines and protecting the mage with second tier fighting skills. Thieves are in back lines with less armour... usually with ranged weapons with their high dexterity... moving to the front to scout and search for traps while the party is in motion.
It's really a great game.

Mages are actually really effective early if you use them correctly. You have to be smart about it. Don't think in terms of damage dealt. Think in terms of controlling the enemy, strategic spells too. You can interrupt attacks with things like magic missiles. Then there are support elements.
In the old 2nd edition rules, there were LOTS of cantrips that were actually really useful early on.
Think in terms of Dragonlance novels where Raistlen defeated an archmage using only a cantrip. Play smart, not big.

This dwarf is small time.
Plus dwarves have good poisson saves.
Roll up ability scores, hit points etc.
Weapons, Armour... Movement speed
Doesn't actually take that long.
Keeping track of movement speed is actually the key to a great game. Using figures is the way to go.
But you can also keep track on paper. Not sure about those online tools.
Hey I DMed for my kids with typical child attention spans...
I can probably even keep Smitty engaged... his attention span is probably about the same...
But I'm betting his military strategy is considerably better.
But the key is the time to create a decent campaign.
Awesome terrain elements. Horseback combat, it can all be done.
I think we have the makings of a great D&D game whenever we get around to it.
We just need to pick an edition...
I'm curious about the later editions... so I'm game to study up... again probably not in the near future.
Too much on my plate these days.
Maybe Cappy and I will team up as DM.... or STA.
So you are the DM?

I'll DM a forum campaign eventually...Penner wrote:So you are the DM?
We'll have to figure out the logistics when the time comes.
In the meantime role play away at your leisure... it's a free for all for the time being.
Maybe Grumpcat can walk us through those online tools at some point.

There's actually a platform for running realtime campaigns across the Internet.

I think so, to host a game. You'd have to convince Sugardaddy Hash that it's productive.
