I am reading Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson. It is a series of short stories about addicts and their attempt to navigate through life carrying around their destructive urges wherever they go. It contains some stream of consciousness William S Burroughs type prose, but it is far more accesible than Naked Lunch. Pretty good book so far.

Martin, check out JG Ballard. That dude is a legend. His books are like Salvador Dali paintings in written form. They tend to be apocalyptic, but his take on society collapsing is not always negative. If you had to start somewhere, I'd recommend his book High Rise or The Drowned World.
