Is that not why the Vikings went a-raiding? Crop failures and starvation? Correct me if I’m wrong.

Vikings were nothing more than a bunch of hick farmers who LARPed once a year like they were these tough warriors. Bjorn probably thinks he's tough. He's not so fucking tough. He's not tougher than me. That's for sure...

There are several likely reasons, most of whom are probably all contributing factors. Starvation and "crop failures" is not one of them.SuburbanFarmer wrote: Mon Mar 09, 2020 6:05 amIs that not why the Vikings went a-raiding? Crop failures and starvation? Correct me if I’m wrong.
Better agriculture had led to a population boom. Which led to more people getting born. People weren't starving or suffering from bad harvests, however for them farming was about more than just being able to feed yourself. There's only wealth in farming if you can sell a surplus, after all. So... the population boom resulted in an economic need for more farmland.
Another supposed cause is that inheritence rights favored the firstbon sons. Meaning that during a population boom in the medieval world, and in old norse society there was no "spare" land to be had to grow wealth (or status) from. That left trading and/or raiding. When you get home, you'll still live on your older brother's land since it belongs to the family, but at least you'll not live on his scraps and you increase the wealth and prestige of your family.
Emerging and wealthy markets had been springing up throughout the Christian parts of the newly Christianized parts of Northern Europe (like Frisia or Saxony, in modern day Northwestern Germany, and of course England). Getting a cut of that trade was lucrative for not only the "spare" sons of local chieftains, but kings as well. Raiding is one way to get a cut, getting them to pay you a tax is another, better way. Taking it over entirely... a third way.
Also no, Vikings didn't "drink blood", eat dogs or drink anything out of the skulls of their enemies, for that matter.

You act like you know all this stuff Bjorn but you clearly do not. Everything you say you just take from books. Just steal knowledge you didn't discover from some books. What a douchebag.

Dogs were domesticated for security & huntingTheReal_ND wrote: Mon Mar 09, 2020 12:29 pm Yeah well according to commie cat face they ate dogs so who am I to believe?
Ancient Vikings had the same relationship with their dogs as military K9 handlers do
That's why they didn't eat their dogs, but rather had their dogs buried with them
So their dogs could follow them to Valhalla
Same thing for prized horses & hunting birds
In the event of starvation, last thing you're going to do is eat your hunting guard dog

Again, you stole that video from youtube. You didn't upload that video. Quit acting like you came up with that Bruce Lee stuff on your own. He was making movies years before you were born dude.BjornP wrote: Mon Mar 09, 2020 7:02 amheydaralon wrote: Mon Mar 09, 2020 6:48 am Vikings were nothing more than a bunch of hick farmers who LARPed once a year like they were these tough warriors.
