There were Mastadons, if I remember correctly early Americans hunted them into around 10,000 years ago, though I remember reading that some could have survived much, much later.

Heck, I want to bring back an entire Pleistocene Hunting Park. All the Mega Fauna, Aurochs, Short Faced Bears, Smilidons, Irish Elk, Bison Latifrons, Panteras, giant flightless birds, Wooly Rhinos, and giant beaver.

Maybe, but I still don't think they would really be mammoths. I think animal behavior is more than genetics. Animals in captivity aren't generally released into the wild because they don't naturally know how to survive. A lot is learned. The best you might be able to pull off is getting some elephants to teach some mammoths how to be elephants.

They aren't going to walk like mammoths, and they aren't going to quack like mammoths. They're only going to look like them. And if mammoth steaks get popular, the idea of bringing back a species just to subject it to factory farming sounds like the sort of next level cruelty that doesn't wash off.

For example, women's monkey-branching, destroying their families due to hypergamy, etc., all comes from their evolutionary psychology, but it doesn't mean they lack responsibility for their actions.

Quite a lot of our behavior is actually genetic, including some of the subtle behaviors that give rise to specific civilizations, such as the high-trust civilizations of European peoples, or the high-conformity civilizations of East Asians.
