That's a little ... extreme. Did he believe his works were non-fiction? There was a real Middle Earth and one ring to rule them all? Was Tolkien a practicing Catholic? If so, that makes a little bit of sense, but I think it's a stretch of the imagination to conclude that creating fantasy gods for a story is worshiping another god.
I'm genuinely confused; not doubting his sincerity.
