Speaking of wave riders, I need to see the ocean again. Does me a lot of good.
All I saw in two weeks was one roundabout with a few demonstrators standing around a fire handing out leaflets.
The best thing I saw with yellow jackets was where they were draped over some of the speed cameras to stop them taking pictures.
The speed cameras in France are evil. They are small black posts about 5 foot tall that you don't see until it's too late.
Here in England they are bright yellow and they are not allowed to hide them behind trees or buildings.
I got flashed 3 times in total but luckily they don't follow up on foreign cars.

People may not know, but Dover Castle was also in interesting as it was used during WW2 (as a vast tunnel system is under the old castle) and was used later too in the cold war. Awesome history for a castle first built in the 11th Century. One of those castles I'd like to visit in the UK.

Well you were right. Dover castle was very interesting.
I only had a couple of hours so I didn't have time to see it all.
I concentrated on the mediaeval buildings and didn't go into the WWII tunnels.
Only open from 11am till 4pm each day so you would need to go two or three times to see everything.
Only got home a couple of hours ago and I've driven 800 miles in the last two days so I can't be bothered to sort out my pics tonight.
Will try and find time tomorrow.

Didn't have a ladder tall enough to reach the roof to pull the ivy all off but have cut away the roots so it will die off and be easy to clear when I go back (probably next month).

Didn't have time to do much in the back garden.
This is the view from the back door...

Goes back about 80 yards looking like that. The little wooden chalet Dad built at the bottom of the garden as a guest room was inaccessible but appeared in good shape from what I could see.

Blossom was out on the cherry trees and where the brambles hadn't taken hold it doesn't look too bad.

Moral of the story, don't leave your house for 4 years or nature will reclaim it.

Pre-Norman invasion Saxon church circa 1000 AD alongside Roman Pharos (lighthouse) circa 100 AD. Top re-built in the 1400s when it was thought to have been re-purposed as a bell tower for the church.

the mound it stands on is thought to have been a bronze age hillfort

These wooden things (whatever they are called) seem to plague me wherever I go.

What we need is more guns...

Proper map of the world with just the important continents on it. Europe, Africa and Asia. ;)
Actually had Sodom and Gomorrah on it.

Guedalon opened for the season last month.

I'm going back to France in a couple of weeks and am going for longer this time. Guedalon is virtually on the route down.
22 years into a 25-year project to build a 13th-century castle using only tools and technology of the time.
Making money too. Three million Euros up.
Volunteers doing most of the work.

About to set off for France again.
Decided to take a tent this time so I can be a tourist on the way back.
Guedelon is on top of my list along with the Normandy landing sites and the standing stones in Carnac (although they are a 200 mile detour).
The two castles near my house will be open to the public now and I've never been inside either.
I found a lovely looking campsite in the Loire valley half an hour from Guedelon with it's own sandy beach and the weather is forecast to be in the mid to high 20's and sunny.

Had to drive into town yesterday for provisions.
The nearest decent sized town is 16 miles away and if you take the scenic route half way there you come across this little pad.
Image

15th century gatehouse and towers at the front
Image
Image

later 18th/19th century fairy tale castle at the back.
Image

fully moated all round
Image

Catfish live in large numbers in the water and on a previous visit I watched an otter swimming in it.
A mile or so away from this castle (Bourg Archambault) is a Gallo-Romano settlement which I've not seen yet.

On the way home I missed a turning and when turning around I spotted this place which is only 2 or 3 miles from my house but I'd never seen it before.

Honestly, you can't fire a trebuchet around here without hitting a castle.
