In an insightful piece for the New York Times today, Margot Sanger-Katz writes that “Political consultants who have worked on ballot measures say that it can often be easy for opponents of gun laws to chip away at very strong initial public support for a given policy.” She talked to David Farmer, who helped lead a failed Maine effort to impose universal background checks. He attributed the loss to gun owners’ ability to persuade:

“We know for a fact we lost the argument at the kitchen table and the bar and the bowling alley,” he said. “The gun enthusiasts were talking to their friends and relatives and neighbors. They felt about it in a way that was so passionate that they won those one-on-one encounters, and they were very successful in bringing in people to their side.”

My own blessed mother, life long liberal and Democrat, was visiting the other weekend, and it took less than 15 minutes of casual conversation for me to convince her that gun control as supported by teenagers wouldn't solve any of our problems. Full 180 degree turn around in the time it takes to brew some coffee.

And I barely give a shit about the 2nd. Some Esquire writers faux hot take on constitutional rights aside, it is very difficult to pass constitutional amendments for a reason, and not even the leftist lefties are enthusiastic about repealing the second, save attention whoring twidiots.

The issue is not actually the Second Amendment, that's a canard, the issue is seeking to bypass the process to install the federal executive as King of the Popes for all intents and purposes, attempting to do an end run around the States Rights to Bear Arms is merely a symptom.

Asserting federal control of the states rights to bear arms because you are unable to achieve your aims within the states themselves where well regulating of the militia is mandated to occur, is the polar opposite of proposing a constitutional amendment.

Gun grabbers have no chance of getting a constitutional amendment passed, and no real interest neither, but they also cannot get what they want passed in the states, hence they are asserting the King of the Popes in Washington to be their final arbiter, federal end run around the states rights to bear arms by executive action.

I am not sure trying to work within the complex strictures of federalism is anti-American either. Feds try to run ends round the states, and states try running them around the feds. American as apple pie.
