Soldiering didn't seem like a job to me, turned out to be exactly as promised in the brochure, an adventure, which was non stop fun because you were always with your buddies.

I'm technically retired now, and I certainly do not wish to work da man, da man not actually being the government, that's not what da man means,

If you can mangle enough definitions while talking about your feels, maybe reality will magically change.
Thank you Rachel Dolezal, for your input.

In the end, I never had any career aspirations, other than the privilege of being a face in the ranks of the thin red line.

Career wise I got in too much trouble to be a rising star.

Partying all the time, getting in fights over mating rituals, then getting hit with a Section 129 charge, which freezes promotion.

I never even wanted to be in the Sergeant's Mess, it was lame.

Some things never change.

(another interesting point Orwell makes in TRtWP: he says that many plain folks main objection to socialism derives from the fact that the average professed socialist is a shitty member of society)
Also that socialism is boring. I think that's the one where he talks about "the brain in the bottle." People want stability and safety, but they also want excitement and adventure. Orwell thought that socialism appeared antithetical to people's notion of an exciting life.
Honestly UBI and other forms of substantial welfare payments are a fucking nightmare socially. I should know because I teach these heathens. People are not inherently "creative" or thoughtful. They are mostly compliant if they are going to be punished or caught doing something "bad", and they are looking for the path of least resistance.

Even with benefits people are and will be miserable still. Maslow's hierarchy of needs isn't the full or real picture. Many people that have shelter, relative peace, and food do not search for higher meanings or artistic pursuits etc.

Spartan UBI is the only way it can work. Robot helots do the producing on the hoplite's farm while he trains every day. No money. Honor and glory, the only coinage.

No, the British Crown is not a republic, a Soldier of the Crown only answers to the Commander-in-Chief, I never swore an oath to the government nor the people, technically, British armies are mercenary armies, not that different from the Foreign Legion. In fact the Foreign Legion is mostly Brits too.
