The reality is that only good paying jobs REQUIRE this kind of commitment.

The other jobs its not required, you simply will never move up the meritocracy.

When I worked at Boeing they would have never fired me for not answering the emails. If you cared about your job and potential advancement or opportunities, then you did.

I would imagine in practice most white collar, corporate jobs are like that.

People feel pressure to answer the emails, and that makes some people feel bad.

Have some personal responsibility. Change jobs, work harder, or come to terms that others work harder than you.

Suck it up buttercup.

You should be concerned that a fucking elected official even drafted the bill.....evidences the degraded state of the republic - the people no longer want freedom....or, more likely, are too fucking stupid to actually want and protect freedom....
I am well aware of how fucking retarded these folks are.

I should say, this specific example doesn't change my concern.

-This law is unlikely to become law.
-if it does, it is unlikely to ever be enforced
-if it is, business will flee
-if there is no were left to flee, then there will be shortages and unrest
If you're relieved because the law will most likely not come to pass....you're still missing my point.
Why should I give a shit about New York?
New York eating their own will probably help Washington State.

We have an EU law where an employer can't make you work more than 48hrs a week. You can still choose to do so if you wish but you can't be forced to.

Because this is America Bitch! Not the fucking EU.
That's not an answer.
Nothing to stop you checking if you want to but you can't be made to work after hours. Why would you have a problem with that.
Am I missing something?

You are missing the point of a salary. Professionals do not work like you do. There is no clock.

I am fairly confident that there is not a single EU country where it's illegal for a boss to require an employee to make work calls or email replies after office hours. Billable hours are billable hours. Count the hours, sure, but imposing a cap on where, how and on what you may spend those hours...? That's completely daft.
Fame is not flattery. Respect is not agreement.

Every time you think King County has hit “Apex Crazy”, they kick it up a notch.

Engineers get called at all hours. I know for a fact that our European software engineer counterparts had work phones and answered emails at all hours, even on vacation.

When I worked in defense and other areas of government contracting, there really was no such issue. Customers would interact indirectly anyway.

Commercial.. you'd have wireless provider VPs calling you Sarurday night because something was up with their network. This could cost people millions for even a small amount of outage, so you better answer the fucking phone.

And.. yeah.. the impact of this is just one more reason for a large company to get the fuck out of that city.

When very large amounts of money are on the line, a law like this is total bullshit. If you don't like it, then go work at Starbucks.
