Some societies are so steeped in tradition that they have no mechanism other than arranged marriages into male-head-of-household. Take that away, dramatic population decline.

The real reason is simply that with more prosperity people have less children: before children were seen as a way for the family to get more income, now they are an expensive investment. You could see this well earlier that rich families didn't have so much children as the poor, hence it's not because of feminism. A high birth rate means today that a country is simply dirt poor.

Demographic forecasts are one of the most reliable, actually, I remember that in the start of the 20th Century demographers could actually quite well forecast what the population here in my country would be in 100 years. And also the demise of the Swedish speaking minority too, actually.

So if Japan has now 126 million people, it will have about 100-108 million people in 2050.

Interesting to see how the country copes with it. I think it will.
