Shit, we've never seen anything like that.
We better start our "Lifetime of first class living for those doing nothing" programs ASAP!!!
I'm not convinced that it's the cause of The Collapse, but it will certainly be the trigger for it. We have underlying issues in our economy that will not survive a large disruption - and this is going to be a VERY large disruption.

On its own, the AI revolution would be a downturn, reshuffling, new systems implemented, then fine again. Coupled with a $20T debt, social instability, strong economic competitors, a desperate MIC, and a clown figurehead... This could be The One.

You don't get it man - 80% or more of the jobs out there can be automated now with today's AI....most of the population simply lacks the intellect to even try to perform the remaining 10% of jobs....its just a matter of time at this point....this isn't science fiction anymore...
You don't get it. You're drinking the kool-aid, and you're gullible as fuck.
Service jobs account for more than 80% of US employment and a primary component of service jobs is interpersonal relations. Something AI is, by definition, incapable of.

But don't let obvious logic stand in the way of a good panic screed, especially if there's a chance someone will cut you a check for doing nothing at the end of the hysterics.

Lolz - the service jobs are about to be obliterated.....how many "service" jobs actually require critical thought? or don't involve mostly repetitive tasks? I'm not the one in the drink.

If you want to look to the past for a better analogy, then look at what slavery did to the economic prosperity of the South. It made a small percentage of slave owners very wealthy, who then accumulated most of the arable land, and then proceeded to reduce most free whites to subsistence farmers. The South never really recovered from the impact of slavery until very recently. It was a disaster.

With automation, the "slaves" will be robots. There exist no moral constraints against using automation. It's a good thing! The problem is not the automation. It's the fact that we live in an economic system that is modeled around scarcity; scarcity of goods as well as scarcity of labor. But when the economy truly automates, there will be little scarcity, and especially no scarcity of labor. The system has to change somehow. UBI is tabled as one way our descendants might do that.

I have seen zero solutions from the critics other than "it's not a problem", which is demonstrably false.

I don't see how. That job involves communicating with the patient and using judgement, when they aren't fully unconscious.

Speaker to Animals wrote:The other quip about the industrial revolution was equally nonsensical. We are not talking about an industrial revolution. We are talking about a robotic revolution. We are talking about a post-scarcity society which, by definition, can't run on an economic model based upon scarcity.

If all you want to do is insult people, then you lost the debate. Come up with some reasonable responses for a change.
Oh, my bad.
In ballooney-cartooney world where Star Trek replicators have destroyed resource scarcity and non-existent strong AI actually exists, and the populace is entitled to not just first world living but to science fiction levels of comfort - THEN maybe it's time to discuss UBI.

But on Earth, where none of that preceding bullshit is true, the answers provided to the panicked handout seekers has been more than sufficient.

Pretty much anything personal - doctors, massage therapists, mani/pedi shops, bartenders, customer service. Not replaceable. But that's no majority of current service jobs.
