the urban South Vietnamese just said Search & Destroy was a bad idea, but the Americans didn't listen
in terms of invading the North, it would have required use of tactical nuclear weapons
in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis, America determined that it was too risky, would incite World War Three

the point is that the ARVN wouldn't fight for it, the ARVN would only fight to defend the cities
soon as you went inland, the ARVN refused to fight
so America couldn't hand it off to them, there was no Vietnamization option
America had to be out there in the jungle, to defeat the NLF / VC for South Vietnam
