Tell you what, if there ever was a blantantly forced attempt at a de facto coup de tat in the USA, I could see things going rather Turkish about it, not necessarily with tanks and whatnot, but if one side tries to depose the other in flagrant disregard for the democratic process employing underhanded means, definitely could see the agrrieved parties reaching for the levers of state security to bring the hammer down upon their opponents with brute force.

Like, I don't see Fort Sumter on the horizon, but there are other ways to fight a civil war, particularly as the Civil War wasn't really a civil war at all. In this day and age, Robert E. Lee wouldn't ride out at the head of an army, things would be quite a bit more clandestine and shadowy than that.

This new style civil war is not really new at all, either. This is just lower intensity street brawling in the fashion of the late Roman republic. The only thing keeping the lid on it now is that, unlike Rome, we have police, and there currently do not exist people like Clodius and Milo (the Roman Milo).

The key thing is you just maintain the facade of the Rule of Law as a fig leaf over your totalitarian dictatorship, you don't necessarily crush people under the tank treads, but you do have the FBI rounding up other agents of the state and then have DOJ trying and convicting them for various ostensible crimes in a kangaroo court, in order to effect a purge of your ideological opponents from the National Security apparatus, then that National Seucurity apparatus becomes your ideological cudgel to hammer your political opponents into submission, with no kinetic engagements in play whatsoever.

I mean, it's not like Erdogan is coming out goose stepping saying "I'm der Fuhrer naow", he's saying "I'm simply defending our democracy from a mob"

Sort of flirting around the edges of it right now tho, you can definitely see the rough outlines of it already, wouldn't take much in this fevered and unhinged environment, when you're this polarized and asserting your political opponents to be "enemies of the state", that's half the battle right thur.
