It's the independent mountain communities of the Iga resisting the dominant and undefeated Oda clan at the height of its power. It's about the "Demon Daimyo" of Japan, perhaps the best military strategist of the age, grappling to adapt to guerilla tactics.
But I won't bore you with the details.
Everything can be reduced to "Viet Cong" if you want.
