As long as you were a peasant, I'd be okay with that. Everybody thinking THEY are the elite is why America was founded. Here, everyone gets to be the center-of-the-universe.
Dude, if you had no choice in who you would be, risking at worst peasantry in England (which wasn't so bad compared to the continent) or being trapped in a Puritanical nightmare state, you'd seriously choose Puritanism? Because I am pretty sure you fucking would say hell no to possibly ending up a slave in the south, and you sure as shit don't have the temperament to long endure Appalachian culture of that era. Quakers were your best bet, but holy shit that would drive me crazy.

You can find me in the English bath house with some scandalous peasant women. Have fun.

My ancestors checked out from America and disappeared into the wilderness along the frontier for a reason. They couldn't fucking stand America.

Dude, you need to travel more. First reason being, you may find someplace you like better; there are lots of ex-pats in SE Asia. Second, it's entirely possible you're living in your imagination; working behind a plow, smelling like sewer, and fucking your toothless wife between the two night-sleeps, may not be all you have it cracked up to be.

Another thing: we really need to stop shitting all over our English heritage. Modern English might be a cancerous and dying lot, but our ancestors were awesome. England was an amazing kingdom in the medieval period.

Another way of looking at America is that America was the English strategy of exporting all the cancer that led to the civil wars to the other side of the planet. We inherited Puritanism and Cavalier culture, and then they added in some crackpot Quakerism because who the fuck wants that in their country anyway?

Later on they realized it was such a success that they exported all the violent criminals and gypsies they could get their hands on to Australia.

The fatal flaw in the plan is that they also sent away all the genetic traits that led to masculinity, and then what masculine genetics remained got culled in the world wars.

I cannot travel to medieval England, but I can actually read historical accounts of the period, listen to lectures by medieval scholars, etc. Which I did. And it was nothing like you just described.

They had bath houses everywhere. Everybody bathed all the time. It was only going into the Victorian era that they for some reason decided to go without cleaning themselves. The bath houses were fucking awesome. Literally. You could fuck without the authorities giving a shit.

Working a field isn't so bad. You had almost half the fucking year off to do whatever you wanted. I would submit to you that our version of peasants (working poor) have lives far, far worse than a medieval English peasant. Maybe not so much for continental Europe, but England? Wasn't so bad comparatively speaking.

If you want to read about horrific, toothless women, go read what women were like in Puritan America.

Religious batshittery aside, the Americans I actually could live with were the Quakers. If I had to choose any American nation, just send me to Nantucket. I will become a fighting Quaker; a Quaker with a vengeance.

But really, I would just make like my ancestor and head for the wilderness.
