We never used travel agencies even when I was a boy.
My father was the travel agent.
The itinerary was you get in the car and drive somewhere my father wanted to see.
Along the way, if you see something else that is interesting, you pull over.
Where do you stay? Motels.
What do you eat? Sandwiches.
What's the entertainment for the evening? Sports on tv, enjoy.
That's how it was in the 1950s for my father, and he just rolled like it was 1950 forever.
It's not like we didn't go to Disneyland, we did go to Disneyland, we just drove up, parked, and walked right in.

When people have families, mainly children you need to plan ahead. To my understanding Thomas cook didn't fail on the travel agency it was the airline that sunk them. If I need a room, I call ahead and take whatever is available.
If nothing is available, I keep driving to the next town.
I'd rather just do my own thing, drive around and explore.
