Re: 2017 Election - What does it mean?
The voters in N.J. are saying the same thing they did last year in the presidential election - another set of miserables where it’s hard to tell which one is worse. Who should we give all our money to, unions or corporate interests?
Interestingly, my small town elected two democrats and ousted two Republicans one of whom was a popular guy. This is an overwhelmingly conservative Republican area, but the town is highly educated and comparatively high income. First time ever we’ve had a female majority council, and I know it was a trust issue. People are voting for whoever they think is less corrupt.

Several DSA candidates won at the state level. A young ginger boy unseated the majority whip in Virginny.
I'm happy about this. There's a 100% chance I will dislike things about the DSA as they emerge. But I think both sides need to be brought to heel, in that they need an injection of populism or, just an insistence that they represent the material interests of the people of this country to at least some degree. If DSA can really gain ground, they will turn the heat up on the Democrats, though the snag is that they genuinely don't care as long as the bribes roll in.
Not sure it will work. I think the lizard people have probably figured out the optimal strategies. But on the other hand, Trump did win on a populist platform, doing things like taking a shit on the Bushes over the Iraq war. He even followed through on killing TPP. Even Obama RAN as a populist.
Probably, the more populist (in a the lose sense of being anything other than Wall Street puppets) wings will be sabotaged, or shoot themselves in the foot. But maybe not.
We need to find a vaccination for identity politics.

Hence why I said Early-Term. Mid-Term is two years into Trump's four-year term... Trump hasn't been in office for even a year yet...Kath wrote:Your math skills need work. At the mid-terms we will be closer to 10 miles in.The Conservative wrote:Q: What are early-term elections good for
A: Absolutely NOTHING!
It's like judging a 20-mile marathon after the first mile... There is plenty of time to change things.

The single, identity issue based voter cannot be reasoned with. Corruption, endless war, surveillance on citizens, loss of 4th amendment rights... can't compete with a baker and the wedding cake or BLM.LVH2 wrote:

How a Socialist Beat One of Virginia’s Most Powerful Republicans
Perez proceeded to name-check Elizabeth Guzman and Hala Ayala, the first Latinas ever elected to the House, but then Hayes asked him about another candidate—one who’d barely received any national attention throughout the campaign. “There’s also, I believe, a Marine veteran who identifies as a democratic socialist who, if I’m not mistaken, is running competitively with someone in the House GOP leadership,” he said. “The House GOP whip might lose to a socialist Marine veteran? Is that actually happening?”
Carter said he’s “always been a bit to the left of where the Democratic Party was, and a little dissatisfied with what they were doing on a large scale, and never knew why. It wasn’t until Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign that I put two and two together. I looked up to guys like FDR and Democrats of that era who were really rooted in working class politics. They had these mass movements of union workers who stood up and said ‘we’re not going to be mistreated by corporate interests anymore,’ and they were able to achieve 50 year of stability and prosperity for this country. I always wondered why Democrats couldn’t act like that again.”

Are we really going to act like this is a mystery? When you have voting blocs determined by race alone why bother with policy.
Republicans could offer 40 acres and a John Deere tomorrow and blacks would still go 85% Dem.

Off pre-midterm - a good 80% of the country didn't even know there was an election.

Yeah then at the last minute he ran those desperate looking MS13 ads. He would've ran like that at the beginning maybe, but this democrat lite/ swamp creature stuff isn't going to work. 9 points. 9 points! Public polling is useless, it is dead.Fife wrote:Chris Adams: Gillespie Ran a JEB! Campaign in a Trump World
Ouch, GOP.Let’s take a look at a few pieces of mail I received. Put aside the woeful electronic media campaign, and the nearly non-existent social media effort. Let’s just look at the mail.
The messaging was almost nostalgic, longing for a political world pre-Trump, pre-Obama, pre-polarization. It's as if President Bush was running for reelection in 2004, and it was no accident we seemed to get the same campaign.
