I wonder if the records that survived are totally accurate. There are remains of whole village settlements found now that we're there for some time.

I have trouble imagining relatively primitive natives driving off Norse settlers like that.

It seems more likely to me the settlements were abandoned due to logistics.

The technological difference between 10th century Norse and the "Skraelings" would not have been as great as that of, say Mexicans and Spaniards. Aside from weapons technology, though... the numbers of settlers didn't come in the same numbers that the Spanish or English did. No one had any control of Norse settlements, no Scandinavian king declared that so and so lands be settled. 10th century Scandinavia was, after all, fairly new to that whole "centralized state with an an advanced bureaucracy" thing.

Still one does not rule out the other, and you're probably right that subsequent settlers thought it wasn't' worth settling there. Southern Europe was richer, anyway, so why sail across the Atlantic to an unsettled land with seemingly no rich trade opportunities?

Anyway, there is evidence that the settlers on Greenland frequently sailed to North America to get lumber (would have been closer than Scandinavia, after all):

I agree mostly, but......
The biggest Tech advantage of the Vikings was navigation and sailing. Didn't they recently discover a Viking era navigation device?
