That the weapon ended up on the ship does not mean that the weapon needed a new ship created to carry it.

Couldn't they go on carriers too? They are already upgrading reactors for mag catapults it seems logical to stick one on a carrier for lulz.

Yeah, because there's no difference in the role of a carrier and a destroyer. Hell, we should put them on our nonexistent battleships too.
