One can never be surprised how batshit insane history is. My base assumption is that rape was something soldiers did and they did not talk much about it afterwards. But there can be exceptions.

They believed in Tengri and were fairly chill about religion at least for a while post Genghis.C-Mag wrote:Aren't the Mongols the obvious answer ?
The Gods of the Assyrians and the Aztecs recently mentioned by History on Fire were more merciless. That got me thinking how far some of these crazy people would have gone.

Lol up until recently, rape was a part of any military experience. This doesn't mean that all wars are bad or unjust, but lets be honest here. It clearly still happens in every modern way, it is just consciously hidden from public view. In the past, most armies felt it was their prerogative after laying siege to a city and did not feel the need to be ashamed about it.

Goes back to what hash said a while back about rape having an inflated importance.
I guess it all comes down to optics, or something like that.
We have a weird way of ranking things.
Take a platoon of soldiers into a village and kill fifty people, massacre. Drop more bombs on north vietnam than all of the bombs dropped in ww2, nothingburger.
Kill millions in fire bombing of tokyo, footnote. Kill fifty thousand at nagasaki, war crime.
Kill thousands barraging baghdad, footnote. embarrass a POW at abu ghraib, international incident.
kill millions of germans invading from the east, war. rape some women along the way, travesty.

I watched a documentary about the Congo. The documentarian could only find on guy to talk about it and he was not very proud.heydaralon wrote:Lol up until recently, rape was a part of any military experience.
