Anyone ever read Drangonlance or Forgotten Realms novels?

I read some. Wouldn't recommend any of them. Except perhaps R. A. Salvatore's books about Drizzt.

Crystal Shard, Dark Elf Triology, etc. good shit. Watched an interview on Salavtore...he's sold more than 17 million books! wasn't expecting that type of success from a D&D writer. Good for him.

Out of your mind. The original Dragonlance novels are pretty good.

The first couple of books about Drizzt are pretty good. The D&D novel subgenre gets exhausting after that. Just those first few novels in those series are worth your time.

I was more a of Drizzt guy. Raistlin too. Fizban was the greatest.

StA is right about Paul Anderson's The Broken Sword. It's a must read if you're into the foundation of the fantasy genre. One of the best books I've ever read.

I read a bunch of the Drizzt books--were like five sold together?--because of "Baldur's Gate," the game. I found them forgettable, but not terrible. The first three "Dragonlance" books were cool, but they took a nosedive around book five or something. "Game of Thrones" was painfully disappointing! The first book started out great--a real page turner (I might add that was was very ill at the time) but it grew wearisome before it was over--nevertheless, as some well-meaning person bought me the other two, I read them... very slowly... like failing students' papers. I'll watch the HBO series when it comes back on, but only because I want them all to die horribly.

Calling GoT fantasy is like calling StarWars Science Fiction.

The first Dragonlance books were based on their RPG campaign. They read just slightly better than an excited teen role player reselling their latest game session. That's why they don't have a coherent arc or proper ending. It was a total surprise hit. Most of TSR didn't understand what they thought they were doing when they made DL but it worked. It resonated with the RPG crowd and it changed the industry. After DL everyone wanted to create worlds and stories instead of just single adventures and set pieces.
Without DL you get no Vampire the Gathering or Shadowrun or Kult or any of the peak of RPG. It wasn't great but it was a new concept.

Yeah, DL novels are good when you realize this is a game transferred to a novel. It's genius once you understand that.
