The internet debate I have seen is between a grizzly and a tiger. Assuming you are talking about full-grown, male specimens from each species, the tiger would tear the grizzly to pieces.
I am not sure about a polar bear. A brown bear might stand a chance against a tiger. A full grown brown bear is like 1300 lbs to the tiger's 600 lbs.

One swat from a bear's paw, even a black bear's paw, would crush a tiger or lion's skull. The biggest cat wouldn't stand a chance against a full grown grizzly.Speaker to Animals wrote:The internet debate I have seen is between a grizzly and a tiger. Depends on the scenario. Cat would pounce from ambush position, of course, not head on.
If they were somehow driven to fight head on, it would probably just be a matter of the cat going for the neck, and the bear mauling it. Both dead within minutes, is my guess.

(Look what I started. Hehe.)
Kodiaks are the biggest Griz; they come in at 1500 lbs. Polar bears are 1200 lbs. but are fully carnivorous. Tigers weigh 675 lbs. Discovery Channel simulations got bears all the way.

That video is awesome.
With sad countenance and downcast eyes, Aeneas wends his way, quitting the cavern, and ponders in his mind the dark issues.

If I were somehow responsible for the survival of the Marines, I would get the Catholic kids who took Latin up front and open a parlay, because I think the only long-term asset they'd really have is their foreknowledge of history, and their knowledge of tech and medicine. I think they would be welcomed and would probably live pretty well, at least until the Emperor had no more use for that information. In the meantime, I would try to find a way to integrate my marines into fighting with the Romans. Alongside the legionnaires, they could use their shock and awe tech to conquer the barbarians at the frontiers and expand the empire, while they train to master the old weaponry, and teach the Romans how to make and use gunpowder.
