As for the Ku Klu Klan, they started as a Southern organization, became embedded in the Southern Democratic Party, and later franchised themselves into the national party and the entire country.

The Republcan Party (Lincoln's party remember) was the party with the greater black membership until the Democratic President LBJ pushed through the civil rights legislation.
