FOX has to know that they could have kept him on and easily replaced the sponsors. I think everyone knows he will land on his feet after this, probably even another show.
They might have been looking for a way to get the younger Carlson up to the top spot while he's hot and before Bill sours with old age, and this seemed as opportune a time as any.

The guy was too smug & pompous for my taste but he was good. Carlson is the perfect choice to replace him.
