I can’t give full credence to 2000 mules without a secondary source. But yeah, I think the truth is that they probably goosed a few cities to turn the tide.

Doesn’t matter - once one a big enough faction of a republic starts cheating the whole system implodes because there is no trust.

We are in the endgame - the question is, what does the next “status quo” look like?

The left has no incentive not to cheat - they want oligarchy socialism/communism over constitutional republic capitalism - so the have all the incentive to break trust in the current system.
