Re: Abortion
Ireland is almost gone, honestly. I think indigenous people are now minorities in the cities, similar to England.
I talked with an Irish woman about a year ago who said she was done and emigrated for the states. If you look at random street photos in Dublin you will see it. They want to be like America, which is ridiculous for Europeans, and they only manage to fuck it up by importing horrible people en masse because their pozzed ideology will not allow them to consider various foreign people as potentially unsuitable.

Re: Abortion
The abortion bans in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland didn't stop abortions. Irish women just took a ferry to Liverpool and had their abortions there.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

And thank god they could, rather than resorting to ‘homegrown solutions’.Montegriffo wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 2:26 pmThe abortion bans in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland didn't stop abortions. Irish women just took a ferry to Liverpool and had their abortions there.

Re: Abortion
I've been away, is there sufficient juice in this forum for a discussion of what might happen with the Dobbs case this year?
https://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/c ... anization/
Does anyone here have thoughts on what the court might do, and how whatever the result is might crack things open even more?
I hope for Roe to be nuked from orbit and everything that would involve, but as a fallback I'll be looking for something that truly exposes the court as a political sham.

I am down for either. Hopefully Thomas still has an impact. Sotomayor is clearly a diversity hire.Fife wrote: ↑Thu Mar 10, 2022 7:14 amI've been away, is there sufficient juice in this forum for a discussion of what might happen with the Dobbs case this year?

Re: Abortion
10 years ago I would have had a different argument but my how the world has changed.
Whenever I hear the word "democracy," I now interpret it as code for egalitarianism. What they really mean is that they want to curtail liberty, and since the only thing that guarantees liberty is the Constitution, and since the Constitution relies on a republican form of government not to be changed by a simple plurality of cosmopolitan voters, so the idea of "democracy" is to get rid of all that. And why? Because feminists, minorities & socialists are a voting majority, and getting more so.
How this fits into abortion is thus:
Morals is not an argument against abortion b/c societal morals impinge on liberty; the only substantial argument against abortion is a liberty-based one. At the time of Roe, children out of wedlock would stigmatize the mother, state assistance for children was stingy, orphanages were suspect, birth control was rare, incubators were new, and there wasn't anything like RU486. In the measurement of mother's liberty vs. child's liberty, as in minors law today, the adult took precedence. Now, however, the child's liberty overrides the simple hardship on the birthmother, at least after RU486 is no longer an option.
SCOTUS has opened the door for each state to decide. Considering the ease of travel, social media appeals, online charity, etc., if one state outlaws abortion, the woman can go to one that does. The only examples I can think of that I personally would agree to old school abortion would be severe genetic flawed fetus or extreme danger to the mother.

Re: Abortion
Your liberty ends where my liberty begins.
The Oral Illusion of calling the child a "fetus" to remove liberty was intellectually dishonest at the time and is even more odious now.
My daughter just delivered a baby 11 weeks early, a little girl, fully functional. Babies can survive in incubators at 28 weeks. That is NOT a fetus.
Yes, pregnancy is uncomfortable but comfort doesn't supersede liberty.

Re: Abortion
I tend to be a pragmatist.
Is the choice between abortion and no abortion
or
legal abortion and illegal abortion?
Because you will get a different answer.
