I don’t think it goes to a full takeover of Ukraine. He’s only aiming for the East and south linkup. Taking the whole thing would only put NATO back on his border. He needs buffer states.

that's quickly going to become a very heavily armed EU/NATO proxy which will pose a serious threat

Considering how "RUSSIA!" is the boogeyman of every Lefty narrative, and that war is the greatest distraction from failure, Putin is right to think his country is threatened by The West. Also, The West is the new Marxism, and Marxism is expansionary: all people have to be equal.

the Ukraine proxy is now far, far more dangerous than NATO

the Ukraine proxy is revanchist now, they will be determined to get East Ukraine back at any cost

and unlike NATO, they are free to attack the Russians without Article V being invoked

so they quickly become NATO's attack dog, with billions in the latest NATO military hardware
