I don't know where else to put this... except perhaps it's own topic...but I think I'll start here...

Martin, have you ever heard of ODD? (and not as a math function, but a psychological diagnosis?)

My wife came to me after getting out of "Early Morning Education" which she does every AM while I get my son off to school... and started a conversation with me about this.

She said, "You've heard of ADD right?"

Of course, I said yes...

She asked me, "Have ever heard of ODD?"

I said no.

She then went to tell me that a kid a school was being what we call an asshole, flipping off another kid and telling him to fuck off after he was called "short"... let's not ignore two facts... he wasn't the shortest one in the group, and he was in the 5th grade...

My wife "corrected" his response by talking to him as the school allows, but then she went to the Vice Principal and asked about the kid... the VP said, "Yeah, he has ODD...(Oppositional Defiance Disorder)"

My wife nodded as she accepted the answer after getting an explanation of what it was and went on her way. Internally she was like, "No, that's what we call an asshole."

She said that the kid was allowed to run rampant at home, with no order, and he was in charge, etc... so of course, he thinks he can get away with it.

If this is true, and schools are starting to use this "Diagnosis" for anyone who doesn't follow "their way" now can be diagnosed with "ODD" and ignored because they have a disorder... good bloody lord... this is getting ourageous.

My MIL is a school counselor (not one of the retarded ones), and she has seen this pop up in recent years. Her take is, "They just need their tail beat, and for someone to actually parent them."

ODD is a way for single moms to not have to parent.

I am afraid it is going to be one of those "over-diagnosed" things in up and coming years... as was ADD and ADHD...

If you can diagnose someone with “opposing authority”, then you can ‘medicate’ them into submission. All part of the compliance program.
