Because it's cheaper than losing your case in court?
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

If your opponent thinks they can win, why wouldn't they simply clean you out in court?

Maybe they just feel like being extra nice to you after you sued them, I guess.

Email as we know it today is a very specific set of protocols. The thing that every article I have found fails to do is to go into the details on where these protocols come from. It very well could be both have a valid claim to inventing email, they just may mean different things when they say that. When Tomlinson makes the claim he may be meaning a system of messaging between two or more computers that mimic mail, where Ayyadurai is claiming he invented the protocols that are used for email today. If so, they may both have equal claim to fame. I would need to dig deeper to verify this, but I suspect this is what is going on.

Two separate issues here. Which idiot, and who are you talking about claiming about creating email?

Don’t worry you’re a different idiot who I don’t mind reading.

If nothing changes after a settlement, that tells the story. If both guys claim to have created email, or only one, you can draw a conclusion.

That is why I give Ayyadurai the nod, because messaging between two local computers vs creating a protocol are two entirely different things. Because even today you can send a message to user123@pcname.domain and if the system is set up that way, you will get a direct message sent to you. That is not what I would call email...

My father helped create the EtherType protocols, but because he worked for a company (Compugraphic), he never got the credit for it. He worked his ass off and I know he did this because we have the hard copy of the code somewhere at my mother's house... he was so excited that they were able to send messages to CA from MA and get a response back in 30 seconds round trip.

There are two issues with people claiming the first of anything, beyond proof...it matters who is the first to get it copyrighted or "certified"... remember, Thomas Edison wasn't the first to create the light bulb, but he was the first to patten it...

You voted for this guy?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiva_Ayyadurai
V. A. Shiva Ayyadurai (born Vellayappa Ayyadurai Shiva,[2] December 2, 1963)[3] is an Indian-American engineer, politician, entrepreneur, and promoter of conspiracy theories, pseudoscience and unfounded medical claims.[4][5][6] Ayyadurai holds four degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), including a Ph.D. in biological engineering, and is a Fulbright grant recipient.[7]

In a 2011 article published by Time, Ayyadurai claimed he invented email as a teenager in the late 1970s. Historians strongly dispute this account however because email was already in use in the early 1970s. Ayyadurai sued both Gawker Media and Techdirt for defamation for disputing his account of inventing email; both lawsuits were settled out of court.

Ayyadurai also attracted attention for two reports: the first questioning the working conditions of India's largest scientific agency; the second questioning the safety of genetically modified soybeans. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ayyadurai became known for a social media COVID-19 disinformation campaign; spreading conspiracy theories about the cause of COVID-19; promoting unfounded COVID-19 treatments; and campaigning to fire Anthony Fauci for allegedly being a so-called "deep state" actor.

Ayyadurai garnered 3.39% of the vote as an independent candidate in the 2018 U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts, and ran as a Republican in the 2020 U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts, but lost to Kevin O'Connor in the primary.[8] After the election, he promoted claims of election fraud that were shown to be false by fact checkers.
Reading that makes me want to vote for him.
SJWs are a natural consequence of corporatism.
