Re: Beyond Woke
YEah, I think FDR gets a lot of WW2 glory - for really being a pissant of a leader compared to Churchill, Stalin, and Hitler. He did better than the Emperor of Japan and Mussolini I guess. But compared to his contemporaries, both Axis and Allies, he wasn't exactly top-of-the-class.
So he gets a lot of glory for holding down his office in WW2.
And not nearly enugh scorn for how he started implementing socialism while claiming to fight for freedom.
But whatever.
He didn't fuck us up by himself, he just gave the already rolling ball a huge push.

the main significance by 1979 is that FDR's New Dealers still controlled the CongressDBTrek wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:08 amYEah, I think FDR gets a lot of WW2 glory - for really being a pissant of a leader compared to Churchill, Stalin, and Hitler. they controlled the Congress right up until Newt Gingrich, that was the first time the GOP was back in legislative power since the Great Depression

Re: Beyond Woke
this is actually what brought Jimmy Carter down and why Reagan took the ball and ran with it
Jimmy Carter was not at war with the GOP, Jimmy Carter went to war against the New Dealers in Congress
then when Dutch Reagan came in, he has this great relationship with Tip O'Neill
so in the end, Reagan came home to the New Dealers and did business with them where Jimmy Carter could not

Lets not forget the hostage issues, and how we had gas lines as long as they do in CUBA....Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:19 amthis is actually what brought Jimmy Carter down and why Reagan took the ball and ran with it

people were already turning on Carter before that happened, because of the Oil Crisis & InflationThe Conservative wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:01 amLets not forget the hostage issues, and how we had gas lines as long as they do in CUBA....Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 9:19 amthis is actually what brought Jimmy Carter down and why Reagan took the ball and ran with it

high unemployment, having to line up to get gas, and the price of groceries going up precipitously, had already turned the tide against him
the Hostage Crisis was just the final nail in the coffin
but that was the beginning of America's long odyssey in the Middle East
that was when Carter invoked the Domino Theory again, just calling it the "Carter Doctrine"
and that is when the Pentagon started to shift to a GWOT, that was the birth of JSOC

Re: Beyond Woke
bear in mind, the Hostage Crisis was Carter's fault
because he had been all in on the Shah of Iran, they had been selling the Shah the latest military hardware, saying everything in Iran was hunky dory
so when the revolution came, and the Ayatollah who was in Paris took over, that was getting blindsided
not as bad as 9-11, but still, it came out of the blue, NSA, CIA, the Pentagon, they all missed the signs, there was no warning, so they were discredited

Wait, we provided the next despot regime the latest in military hardware by arming a useless puppet government that quickly buckled under the merest pressure?Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:19 ambear in mind, the Hostage Crisis was Carter's fault

This story seems oddly familiar.

at the time, we were only vaguely aware of IranDBTrek wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:22 amWait, we provided the next despot regime the latest in military hardware by arming a useless puppet government that quickly buckled under the merest pressure?Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:19 ambear in mind, the Hostage Crisis was Carter's fault

up until this point, it had all been about Israel
and Carter was actually good on that, Carter did calm that situation down
but then he lost all credit for that when the Iranian Revolution came out of nowhere
again, this is 1979, there is no internet, we don't know what's going on in this era, until it is reported on the six o'clock news

Re: Beyond Woke
like there was no 24 hour news in 1979
you got the news twice a day, morning papers, then the six o'clock news
otherwise, you just got on with your life, we didn't track the news round the clock back then like people do now
and that was liberating, checking the news 24-7-365 on the smartphone is the nature of Smartphone Zombies, paralysis by analysis
back in 1979 you had better things to do with the rest of your day, mostly trying to pick up girls for most guys back then
there was no AIDS, and no Me Too Movement, it was still the era of free love, getting laid was the main event at the time

I miss those days. 25 minutes of whatever you watching and 5 minutes of commercials if you were unlucky.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:35 amlike there was no 24 hour news in 1979
