The Empire is an older invention than the Nation state. The tribe was first, then came the city state. An Empire is a collection of tribes and city states brought under a central power, made possible by the invention of written language. Always multicultural and multilingual.

The first Nation state was the Kingdom of Israel, one nation for one people with a single common history and religion.

Written language made empires possible. The nation state requires a common story, language and history. The Hebrew Bible made the Jewish state possible.

Feudalism is a version of empire. Disparate parts brought together by force of arms and inheritance.

The printing press gave all cultures the means to get what was needed to form a nation. It destroyed the empires and feudal states, bringing most people with a common culture into separate nation states.

Now we have the Internet ascending as the new information paradigm, and the nation states are being diluted as the membranics of nations starts to fail.

I have no idea what comes next. New tribes perhaps, or a new global empire.
