Dude can clearly reach you with his legs before you get anywhere near to him. If he has an ounce of training he'll probably be able to reach you with his arms before your legs can touch him as well. Half a foot of height is no small advantage. Then there's the extra decades of youth, bone flexibility, endurance, metabolism, possible cardio stimulants in his bloodstream - I dunno man. You're probably pretty lucky he wandered off. Not saying you would've lost for sure - but the advantages were clearly all lined up behind him - plus when was the last time you got blasted in the face with a fist? Things start feeling different the older you get.

Knives may be illegal - but only if the 5-0 knows you have one ... and why would they?
I'd rather be criminalized by the state than risk a curb stomping by a tweaker, personally.
But everyone has to do their own risk analysis I guess.

Idk, I don't get that scared in these situations, I was more annoyed than anything

because he was so tall, I would have to use a lot of force, unarmed combat to defeat him

I could have done that, but it would have been a big hassle with the law at that point

so I just stood my ground, waited to see what he did

he had plenty of time to do something before the lady at the store called the cops

the simple act of standing my ground was enough to expose him as a cowardly bully
