The beat I can come up with is excessive spending - but that seems by design. The way to break a republic is by spending it into oblivion - we're spending money so fast the last 20 years it stinks of designed collusion to break us.

but in this case I believe it is the onset of an epoch

the Information Age

round about 1980, the amount of information society had to process went exponential

and it has just been compounding year after year, now forty years into it

it's just too much information for society to process

it's breaking down the bonds which held the society together

it's making a functioning democracy unsustainable

it's causing the civilization we knew before to collapse
