The market needs to be free, but at the same time, we need to make sure that monopolies don't exist, which strangles the ability of a free market.C-Mag wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 11:21 amThe Conservative wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 10:51 amLet's see I said that there is a difference between profit and greed. I wasn't posting about profit and greed. I was making the case that truly free markets are good, but interference is bad.
Example
Walmart is an essential business, but Mom and Pop store isn't.

Define where profit crosses over into greed. The Conservative wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 10:51 amLet's see I said that there is a difference between profit and greed. Ask 100 people in the wild and you will get a wide range of answers. The commies will tell you that any profit is greed.

The US Government destroyed our lumber industry 20 years ago by severely restricting cutting timber on public lands.PartyOf5 wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 11:40 amSo there's a lumber monopoly? The Conservative wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 11:30 amThe market needs to be free, but at the same time, we need to make sure that monopolies don't exist, which strangles the ability of a free market.
The 2nd and 3rd order affects were the demand being met by Canada, which increased shipping costs and end product prices. The private timber giants like stoltz and werhauser made more money. Lastly, th he number of US Mills plummeted.
Federal policy made private timber companies and international lumber suppliers rich while destroying us timber jobs and infrastructure.
Yay Spotted Owl.

The whole point of government is to protect the US people, it has become a much larger entity and has lost its way. You are probably too young to remember this, but there was a time where positions such as peon, manager, boss, owner each made money, but it wasn't 100 times the difference...PartyOf5 wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 11:38 amDefine where profit crosses over into greed. The Conservative wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 10:51 amLet's see I said that there is a difference between profit and greed. peon made on average a "living wage", their manager would make 1.5 times to 2 times the base salary of an employee.. the "boss" would make three to four times as much as the base salary... the owner would make between five to seven times the base salary... there would be bonuses and pensions, etc...
Now, that is thrown out the window.
Products used to also be sold at a level in where the customer would pay values of a product which would equal three times the actual value of the product itself.
The company would then break that three values into three pools of funds. the first would be to pay the cost of the workforce, the second would cover the cost of materials to make the product, and the third would be considered profit. That has also been thrown out the window as well.

If the government hasn't legislated against it, or made it prohibitive through related legislation, anyone can start a business that offers the same goods/services as anyone else.
Of course, I can't start a rival cable company to offer broadband internet access in my area, but it's not because Comcast can stop me.
