Martin’s Standup

Post by Martin Hash » Tue May 11, 2021 7:12 am

I don’t know when it was, decades ago, probably when I was a kid, I wanted to do stand-up comedy; I guess we all did, and most people, like me, never got around to it. I did keep a file with all my funny material though for when the time came. Finally one day in old age, I thought “Dammit, I’m going to do this!” so I got out the file and there were 22 pages! Certainly, I figured, there had to be a 5 minute show in there; maybe even 10? I spent months putting it all together: three 3-minute shows on different topics. I came up with a costume, and bought a second video camera, lapel mic, stage lights & a backdrop, and began practicing what I thought was the best show of the 3.

I rehearsed for a couple months, on and off camera. Finally, I told everyone my comedy debut was almost upon us, and recorded that first show one evening. The next day I opened up the editor and began cutting the takes together but watching myself over-and-over, I had a sinking feeling. It got so bad, I never finished the edit: too embarrassing. But I didn’t give up: I left the stage up and decided to muse on it... 6 months later I put that 1st video into backup and took most of that script and integrated it into my new novel, then threw out most of the material in the other 2 scripts and combined what was left into 1 final attempt at been funny on camera. Before wasting anymore time, I performed it by reading the leftover script to my wife. She laughed; real laughing; told me it was worth recording, so I rehearsed for a week hiding in my bedroom then recorded and edited it in 1 day. I’m no George Carlin but it isn’t embarrassing. Counts too: I’m a stand-up once comedian. (Caution: mature viewers)

There were some zingers in there, way to go!
"You wouldn't want a threesome with an ugly chick!"
ZING!

Good on you for having the balls to just go for it. Stand up is one of those things that looks really easy, but in practice, may be the hardest craft of the entertainment industry to master. Anyone can pretend they're someone else. Anyone can learn to passably play a musical instrument. But to stand alone, and just talk for 5 minutes to an hour in a way that is not only captivating but also hilarious?
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck dude.
Stand up is no joke!(ba-dum-tsssssh!)

We all laughed when you said you were going to be a stand up comic.
Well, no one's laughing now.
