Cribs

Post by Martin Hash » Mon Apr 26, 2021 8:33 am

It's been some beautiful weather. I got the cars out, raced them around, washed them, parked them in front of the house all week. Picture reminds me of "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" (except I'm not famous.)

you're famous with me, clawed your way to the top in America, that's the big leagues

my modest little home still feels like rich to me mind you

the deck, the patio, the two car garage, the big backyard, on a bungalow which is quick & easy to clean

we are down to just one car now, but I keep it spotless, inside & out

That's a story all unto it's own:

It's steel that looks like "Blue Slate." At the time, I was the only one doing concrete construction, plastic stucco, and steel roofing. I got into it with my homeowner's association who said the roof didn't pass the CCNRs because it was "blue" and not "real" slate. I had the engineer come give them a presentation. They still turned me down. The next person they saw was my attorney, and knowing I would spend away their Road Maintenance account AND win, they backed down, but that was just the start.

I was the General on the construction, and I couldn't get anybody to bid it at a reasonable price. I mean anything close to what a real slate roof would cost, and this would be a lot easier AND had structural integrity, which slate, tile or shingles do not. Finally, I got this fool who underbid it by half. I figured he wanted to get in on the ground floor of an up & coming technology, and was smart enough to see it would be easier than slate. But, alas, he was indeed a fool. He did about a third before determining the job was going to bury him, but he could do it otherwise. I told him I'd give him a 20% bonus if he finished. Still nothing: he told me he couldn't afford to pay anyone to help him. I gave him my son, Haven, who was still in high school. Haven kept that guy in check: he'd call him if he didn't show up, he'd stop him from having long breaks, he kept him to a time-table because Haven was a 4-year letterman in 3 sports at a 4A school, and the chicks dug him, so he didn't have time for lollygagging around. Finally, after more than 6 months, they finished. It was an absolutely beautiful job. I even hired the guy to do more work for me.
