Space Shuttle was the worst possible design for space exploration. A half-assed attempt at an SSTO vehicle, as mandated by politicians trying to 'save money'. Unsafe, unstable, and unable to get anywhere further than low-earth orbit. Absolute trash, repeated again by Constellation, and now SLS.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 7:30 pmthe Space Shuttle was expensive, and it blew up twice, every complex machine is full of bugs and flaws, so what ?SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 7:21 pmAgain, if we can save a few trillion on other boondoggles with this one, I'm all for it. Go F35!
There's still that issue with supplying oxygen to the pilot, and software glitches... but hey, let's save some money.
This is why Elon is able to run laps around NASA - they're run by the politicians now.
Never heard of that, but interesting. That's probably why the F-16 has been dominant for so long.the F-15 Eagle has a critical design flaw which can cause it to break up in flight, but every F-35 hater loves F-15
We didn't need a fighter jet then, and we don't need one now, but they're pretty cool at air shows.

the F-16 is the same as the F-35, the fighter to win the market share with allied nations

Yes, market share. Profits for the MIC. Nothing to do with defense, as we already knew.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 8:06 pmno, the F-15 is dominant over the F-16SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 8:05 pm

there is very little profit in weapons, the profit margin on the F-16 is 10%SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 8:08 pmYes, market share. Profits for the MIC. the whole point of F-16 was for NATO to standardize to the American fighter

it's not about comparing F-35 to some perfect fighter which doesn't exist, although that it the media narrativepineapplemike wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 8:09 pmsmitty breaking it down as per yugeSmitty-48 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 7:35 pmin fact, anybody who is old enough to remember, knows that the media trashed the F-15 back in the 70's

when you compare F-35 to the actual alternatives, it's a no brainer
also bear in mind that F-35 is replacing F-16 & F/A-18 which have all sorts of bugs themselves
it's not even expensive for what it does, an F-16 with sensor fusion would cost the same
sensor fusion is the most expensive part of the F-35
but that is the game changing part which makes it a revolutionary leap
the picture that the pilot is looking at in the cockpit, nothing that has come before can do that
is it complex and fraught with issues ? Yes it is, but the situational awareness gained is worth it
